Do you ever feel frustrated with yourself when it comes to your health and wellness goals because you haven’t achieved them? Feeling like you’re always restarting?
It’s common for us to experience frustration from time to time. The feeling of frustration is caused when someone or something prevents us from getting or doing what we want. And yes, that can include our self!
Frustration reminds us that our current actions are ineffective in helping us achieve our goals. It can be a motivator to do something different.
Sometimes we can feel frustrated and be hard on our self because we think we’re not being consistent with anything.
It may be a pattern we unconsciously go into that sabotages our efforts so that we can “still feel safe” thereby hindering our wellness goals. That good ole reptilian part of our brain thinking it’s helping us.
‘Restart’ is defined as to start again: to resume something after interruption.
Before we do; what if we stop to consider our goal and what’s been going on? There’s feedback in our previous action/inaction. If we review, reflect and refine then we can restart from a more informed position; ultimately creating the success we desire.
REVIEW. REFLECT. REFINE - Most importantly, using self-compassion and non-judgment.
This gives you an opportunity to:
What is the goal? Why is it important to YOU to achieve it? There will be deeper layers behind this.
Eg: Goal = “lose weight”. Why is it important to you to lose weight? Answer that one, and then ask yourself why that (answer) is important to you. Keep going until you find the emotion behind it. Realising why and what is important to you can help you stay/get back on track.
What preconceived expectations do you have? Do you need to adjust them and be more flexible?
What works and what doesn’t? Why are your current actions ineffective? Eg: Reducing refined sugars is working for weight loss and wellness. Being too focused on the daily number on the scales isn’t.
What is the pattern keeping you stuck or see-sawing between where you are now and what you want to achieve? Eg: as soon as the stress level ramps up you console yourself with sugar or alcohol. Maybe you give up when the number on the scales doesn’t budge for a week or it goes up a bit yet you’ve “been good”.
What do you choose instead? Recognise when you’re defaulting to the pattern and then choosing what aligns with your goal instead.
What aligned action step is needed? Identify what you need to adjust and/or learn that will support you to move forward and achieve your desired goal. Eg: Use non-food/alcohol ways to de-stress. Reach out for support from someone that can guide you. Develop and use guidelines that support your life and wellness goals.
Every day, every moment is an opportunity to restart. When we’re consciously aware we can flip the switch, remove the frustration and commit to our desired end result with a renewed sense of purpose and clarity.
Remember, progress is not always linear, and setbacks are not failures—they are simply stepping stones on your journey. Embrace the process, and celebrate the small victories along the way. Each step, no matter how small, brings you closer to your goal.
Self-compassion is key. Treat yourself as you would a dear friend who needs encouragement and understanding.
Surround yourself with a supportive community or individuals who uplift and inspire you. Share your journey, your challenges, and your successes with them. This shared experience can be incredibly empowering and can provide the encouragement you need to keep going.
Finally, remember that your health and wellness goals are about more than just physical changes—they are about creating a life that feels fulfilling and balanced. It’s about nurturing your body, mind, and soul. So, take a deep breath, trust in your ability to grow and evolve, and embrace the journey with open arms. You’ve got this!
